Installation of Vista SP1 backs up all the files that it replaces. This is done so, if, should you choose to uninstall SP1 at any point of time, these backed up files are readily available.

However after a couple of weeks, if you are comfortable with SP1 and if you are sure that you will not need to uninstall SP1, then you may wish to consider removal of several 100 MB of such back up files and reclaim disk space. You will be able to free disk space of 600-800 MB.

Vista SP1 integrates a tool named vsp1cln.exe situated in the system32 folder.

To run this tool, open a cmd or simply press Winkey + R keys and enter: vsp1cln.exe

The following switches can also be used:

/o: path to an offline Windows
/Verbose - display extra details
/quiet - silent execution, skips questions
/h: display Vsp1cln.exe commands list

This tool removes older versions of components that have been updated in SP1, which are stored during the installation in case you need to uninstall SP1 later. You can use this tool both online and offline, but you must have SP1 installed. You will not be able to uninstall SP1 after you run this tool.
